What Is Direct and Indirect Speech?

In direct speech, we repeat the exact words of the speaker inside inverted commas. In indirect speech, we report the meaning in our own words.

Direct: She said, “I am doing my home task now.”
Indirect: She said that she was doing her home task then.

Easy Rules for Class 10 Direct Indirect Speech

Tense: Past reporting verb makes the tense go one step back (am → was, will → would).
Pronouns: I, we and you change into he, she or they.
Nearness words: now → then, here → there, tomorrow → the next day.
Questions: Use whether or if for Yes/No questions. Use the question word itself for what, why and where.
Orders and requests: Use “to + verb” with ordered, requested or advised.
Exclamations: Remove the exclamation mark and use exclaimed with joy or sorrow.
Present tense reporting verb: The tense does not change.

What Should Students Do?

Attempt any 5 of the 8 sentences and do the easiest first.
Check pronoun and tense in every sentence.
Never use inverted commas or a question mark in indirect speech.
